I’ve been talking about this a lot lately. Toxic positivity.
It’s often the case that when you first start exploring positive living and spirituality, ‘thinking positive’ tends to be the thing you start banging on about! I’m cercertainly guilty of this. It’s like Law of Attraction 101. But positive thinking seems to have become more of a trend than a thing that actually helps people.
The World can be a dark and scary place, but I believe it’s designed like that for a reason…
I believe that we’re all here to learn lessons and to grow; physically, emotionally and spiritually.
🌑We learn our lessons in the darkness.
☀️We grow in the light.
Life is about balance. Honouring the darkness and the light. Knowing that both are valid, both serve a purpose and both are okay.
So next time you’re wallowing in the darkness, don’t add another layer of pressure by thinking you ‘should think positive’. Just embrace the darkness. A lot of processing need to happen here. Accept it as a place that serves you lessons. It’s a place to face your fears, to understand the World on a deeper level, and to recognise that you’re a human having a human experience. Just remember that it’s only temporary. Feel how you feel for as long as you need to feel it, but then hatch a plan to find your light.
Because in the light you’ll recognise your truth and your worth. In the light the lessons become clear and you will grow, and even blossom. The light is a wonderful place to be, and it helps us realise how incredible life can truly be. But if we stayed there all the time we’d never learn anything.
Life is a rollercoaster full of highs and lows, our duty is to embrace the whole ride.
Next time you see someone in the darkness, please don’t tell them to think positive, to keep their chin up or to smile. Instead, assure them that we all have dark times and that it’s okay to feel how they feel. The lightness will come, but it doesn’t have to be today. Lessons and growth take time.
Honour both the darkness and the light.
